My great hope, that the people of the world will breakthrough the barriers of ethnicity, religion and nationalism that separate us, is when we reach out across those borders to our neighbors. I think this is happening more than at any time in the history of mankind. In our past we reached out with guns to build empires. Now more people, especially the young, are reaching out through the Internet.
The traditions of the past still have a strong hold on our societies in every part of the world. The kind of change I want to see is still a long way off. We still see ourselves as American, French, Indian, as Hindu, Muslim and Christian. The old resist change as much as the young push for it.
I am encouraged when I see organizations like Playing For Change, who are, however slowly, pushing us in the direction of one world without borders.
Do you think the world is moving more in the direction of cooperation, or in the direction of more conflict?
Do you think the human race will be around in 10,000 years?
“Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world.”
Looking at the responses to my question so far the four people who believe in God all think conflicts are likley to increase. I don’t believe in God and think the world will become more peaceful.
It is a small sample, but is there something about our different belief systems that makes Christians more pessimistic about the future, and Atheist more optimistic?
