Noah had his ark, to save himself and his family, from the great flood, and to save the animals to build the new world with.
If you had to build that ark for a new world, but you could only take 5 animals, which would you pick?
1.Sheep to make wool for clothing
2.Pigs. I can’t imagine a world without bacon.
3.Horses – for transportation to help us get around this new world
4.Dogs – Man’s best friend, also to help guard our homes.
5.Platypuses – they are just so much fun to look at, and we need at least one strange critter around to remind us that life doesn’t always make sense.
Our faith is like Noah’s ark. It keeps us safe, floating above the floods of life that we could easily drown us.
If you were to build your ark of faith which 5 passages from the Bible would you choose as your planks? Feel free to choose less, or than 5, this isn’t a homework assignment.
Discuss the reason why you picked them for as many as you have time for.
The planks for my science based ark
1.Evolution – life is continually changing. With out change our world, if it came into existence at all, would have remained a fiery, bubbling cauldron, continually bombarded by objects from outer space.
2. Natural Selection – the organisms that adapt best to changes in the environment are the ones that survive, and thrive. As this applies to human society, as our brains evolve so will the societies we build.
3.Decay – this is the force in nature that allows changes. If nothing decayed than the Universe would never change, or probably even have come into existence.
4.Newton’s third law – For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This gives me hope that someday I may learn to understand women.
5. Whatever force in nature results in laughter, muddle puddles, and whip cream pies.
Genesis 6:13-18
13And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
15And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
16A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

5 animals (my reasons are silly and far less intellectual than yours
)
1. Monkeys–because they are super intelligent and entertaining!
2. Penguins–because they’re cute and cuddly.
3. Dolphins–my favorite animals and as long as I am choosing I’ll assume that they can survive outside of water on my ark (by faith! hehe)
4. Horses–because I think they are the most graceful creatures ever
5. Butterflies–because they are pretty and represent new life
As far as passages go I have a lot but the ones that come to mind immediately are:
1. Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding shall guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
2. My soul wait patiently for God alone for my expectation is from Him.
3. Is anything too hard for the Lord?
4. I was young and now I am old but I have never seen the righteous forsaken nor His seed begging bread.
5. Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.

Good choices gchyayles.
Horses, dolphins and butterflies would all bring grace and beauty to the new world, over land, water and sky. I would want to live in a world without grace and beauty.
Monkeys and penguins are very entertaining to watch. Although with their sharp beaks I am not sure if I would want to cuddle a penguin.
The first four passages you picked all speak to having faith in your Lord. Since he was the one who saved you from the flood, it would be a good idea to get in his good graces.
Faith elevates our lives above simply surviving. Faith allows us to dream of a better future for ourselves, and our loved ones.
Your last passages, Philippians 4:8, are all the things that faith will bring us. Truthfulness, nobility, righteousness and purity, are the recipe for leading a faith filled life. They would serve us well in the new world, or any other.

But on a serious note thank you for teaching me so much. I appreciate you.
You’re right in that our faith elevates our lives above simply surviving. As Jesus said I came that you may have life and life more abundantly. While we are supposed to go through pain and suffering in this journey we are meant to experience joy and peace too. It’s not all saved up for Heaven. God intends us to enjoy some of those fruits here on earth too.

5 animals?
You guys have already chosen most of the best ones but mine are:
1. Goat (practical) can use recyclably for milk, cheese, wool (angora’s) meat (less recyclably)
and they are nature’s waste disposal – will eat almost anything.
plus watching them and their smile makes me feel good. There is something spiritual about their serenity, i feel.

2. Dolphins – i love intelligent discussion and i’m probably more likely to one day have one with these guys than many humans. (present company excepted)
3. Donkey – (practical) if you want a pack animal then it’s a choice between these guys and a camel. A Donkey was good enough for JC so it’ll do for me.
4. Tuna Fish (how do you tuna fish? with the scales of course)
Not sure if i’m supposed to assume these won’t survive in the oceans like the Dolphins may but i’d save them for brain food as my favourite edible fish and they would be food for the dolphins also (well the baby ones could be).
5. Panda – how could you not want to save one of these if you’ve seen them as a cub??

1. Love God, love your neighbour as yourself (that last one is just so dang hard to do at times)
2. As you would have others do unto you, do even so unto them (but PLEASE get that one right – it is NOT about thinking that when they are doing unto you that they are believing what you believe – it’s about having respect for the beliefs of all others – not just your own or those who think as you). You have the right to believe in the God of your choosing (or none) all should be given that right as you have yourself. This does not prevent you from sharing your belief with others in a respectful manner to the best of your ability. It does require you to listen to those who would do likewise.
3. same a g’s #1 – in All things give thanks.
4. Genesis 1:1-4 In the beginning… God separated the Light from the darkness and saw that it was good.

Good thinking Love, about goats and donkeys. These are two animals that are very useful to have around. They would both be on the top of the list for anyone living in the pre-modern world, which would be what the world would look like after the great flood.
It would be interesting to have a conversation with a dolphin, my guess is that technology will make that happen one day. If Douglas Adams is right we would learn something very useful.
I enjoy eating tuna, although not much of a fan of sushi. I would have a hard time living without bacon, so pigs get my vote.
I did bring a panda looking teddy bear to bed every night as a child. Not sure I would want to do that with a live one.
Your first passages are about loving, and acting with love, towards our neighbors are important to remember. Not surprising for someone with the handle of Love.
I think you are right that many people get Luke 6:31 wrong. We assume that what we want is what everyone else wants. The respecting of other peoples beliefs is often missing.
Giving thanks for what we have is important. Especially after surviving that flood.
Humbleness is a good quality to have, but I can’t claim it is something I have ever been good at.
1 Corinthians 13:7 – Believing the truth of our faith allows us to endure, and bare, the trials that will come. Faith gives us the assurance of a better future.

While i generally don’t like ‘knocking’ the bible and believe it is quite a reliable source for information i do have to confess that a strict interpretation of Genesis as is popular amongst certain sections of the American ‘bible belt’ i really cannot get to stand up with known facts and the ark is one of those stories that i truly find difficult to accept verbatim.
Just one of my reasons being: Australia is and has been an island since the last ice age of 11,000 years ago when ocean levels dropped because of the amount of water locked in frozen ice-caps that covered Europe and N America. How then Did Noah who it is shown through genealogies in the bible lived no more than 5000 years ago manage to collect every single species of animal unique to Australia take them on board the Ark in pairs and sevens and then return them to this land after the flood had dried up?
And without a single platypus, kangaroo or koala bear or any one of the thousands of other unique fauna Australia now possess’s straying from his flock on the 8 000 mile journey through Asia and across the Timor Sea?
Same goes for the Americas of course.
i’m pretty darn sure if Noah did as he was instructed that an ark of those dimensions could not possibly carry two and more of every single type of animal world wide, plus the all the food needed to last for a few months voyage.
i’m also a little less than certain that the various racial characteristics could have developed, as it has in the current number of distinct human races, from Noah’s descendants in such a short time span – especially considering the Chinese have a clear recordable history going back some 5000 years and our Aboriginals have been shown to have existed here for 40,000 years plus?
i’m not saying these things were impossible – but given that God performs most of His Miracles though us as human beings i’m having difficulty seeing how He worked those ones exactly?
if there are biblical answers i’d love to hear of them – anyone?

My critters I would take -
1) Horses – three in fact, a mare, a stallion and a gelding named Amos, just couldn’t leave him behind! i rode him yesterday.
2) White-tail deer – they are beautiful – and taste good if need be!
3) Swine – like Ed, gotta have my bacon.
4) Fish – I love fish – especially Salmon & Walleyes, I guess they could just swim along.
5) Guernsey cows – good for milk & cream.
I have a rather small family to take so I’d take some of my blogging friends as well. Want a ride Ed?
Actually only one plank – Genesis 9:11 “… never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” So Ed, God has saved our bacon!!

Besides the horses I sense the theme of good eaten. My grandfather in Maine did a lot of hunting and fishing. Everything fresh taste better, true with game as well as veggies.
You would have to bring the horses since I see Mama didn’t include them on her list.
If you brought all the kids you and Mama help raise you would have a very large family. Might not be room for the animals.
You make a good point with Genesis 9:11. If God didn’t stop the flood it would make much difference which animals you brought along. I am not ready to surrender my will to God, but for bacon I might think about it.

Five animals:
1. Chickens — I must have my eggs. I think I eat a dozen a week. And I rarely eat red meat.
2. Birds — all kinds (since Gch didn’t have to specify a type of butterfly, I’ll go with ALL birds). Their song and flight make my heart soar.
3. Horses — their grace and beauty alongwith their power and utility.
4. Cows — I couldn’t live without cheese. Well, okay…I probably could, but I wouldn’t like it much.
5. Dogs — the cute kind like Sammy (my schnauhuahua) and Maxie (my Westie).
Five planks:

Thanks for this post, Ed. It made me think through some things. How do you do that? You’re being led by the Spirit of God, even if you don’t believe it. He’s using you…if for no one else, at least for me. I am grateful.

Horses are getting a lot of votes. Good workers and companions.
It would be good thing to have the beautiful voices of song birds filling the air.
I would want dogs as well, but I favor the bigger work dogs, like a German Shepard. The first dog I played with as a child was a my grandfathers German Shepard, Bart. Sammy the schnauhuahua? Did your fingers get stuck on the keyboard?
Is he a mix between a Schnauzer and a Chihuahua? My best friend growing up was Buttons, a mutt we pick up at a dog pound.
1 John 1:9 The great flood would be like a sea of darkness. You do need the light of your God to show you the pathway to the safety of salvation.
John 3:16 has the same theme that if you believe in God you will have the reward of everlasting life.
1 John 1:9 Since the flood came because of the unrighteousness of man, you should confess your sins so that God can cleanse you of them.
John 14:5-7 In the flood God washed those who would not see him. A good enough reason to obey his commandments.
Romans8:18-19 Faith is what gets you past your suffering. You should give thanks to God when he reveals his Glory to you.

Dogs are the best companions. Pet therapy is becoming increasingly popular. Many elderly people have had their spirit regenerated after getting a canine companion.
Another one of my blog buddies, Sara, Gitzengirl, suffering from Ankylosing spondylitis, has her companion Riley, just like you have Sam, and I had Buttons, during my troubled childhood.

if we are to live a healthy life we need to find the right balance for us personally. Given how your body seems to be trying to tell you something i’d be looking at my diet first, my house second and my environmental factors third in order to see if i could find a better living balance that my body responds better to.
Unless you are 100% convinced that God desires for you to suffer in this particular way for a VERY good reason?

I am with you on the cows and pigs, not so much on the cat.
My cousin has six cats. The oldest, Rusty, likes to snuggle next to her at night. Not because Rusty likes people, which you will find out if you try to pick him up, he just wants to be next to a warm body, any warm body will do.
Prov 3:5-6 Faith means trust. Finding the right pathway in life is not easy, but trust in your God and he will show you the way.
John 3:17 God showed his love of man by sacrificing his only son to save you. We condom ourselves, God can save us.
John 10:10 The world is full of thieves and robbers, those drowned in the flood. Jesus came so that you may have a full life, through him and his guidance.
John 15:10 A child should obey its father to stay in his love. So does Jesus obey his Father, and so should we obey him. Of course many of the children I have meet are much into the obey part.

Interesting choices in animals Danielle.
Gchyayles also picked monkeys. Fun to watch and very clever. Also our closest cousin in the animal kingdom, if you believe evolution.
Rabbits are cute and taste good in stew.
Why does anybody think a rabbit’s foot is good luck. I didn’t bring much luck to the rabbit. If you bring two on the ark you will need some extra rooms for the dozens you will have when the flood stops.
Giraffes and Zebras are unusual looking, stripes and long necks. After the flood you could turn your ark into a zoo and charge admission.
Alligators? That ark had better be big enough to give them their own room, or there won’t be any other animals left at the end of the voyage.
Genesis 1:1 – as you say provides the solid foundation to build your faith on.
Romans 5:8 – We were sinners, the reason for the flood, but God showed his love for you by saving you.
Mathew 22:37-38 – Filling you heart with love, of God, and your neighbor, is a good prescription to provide you with the spirit you need to make the world a better place.
Mathew 28:18-20 – Having a purpose in life is very important, none more than helping to others find faith.
Acts 1:8 – God gives you the Holy Spirit to guide in to that better future.

I think for my scriptures, they would be about worship… good thing to do during a flood, and centrally who I am

Some interesting animal picks Deb. No surprise that you pick Psalm for as the planks of your ark.
Horses have been the most popular choice, made it on 5/8 animal list.
Alpacas, I am all for having something soft next to my skin.
Elephants certainly would be a challenge. You had better bring some pretty big shovels on your ark.
Cleaning up after these guys will give you a good workout.
Pumas, beautiful (even if it is a cat), graceful animals. They have a wide range, seen any Oregon?
Elk, I hope your Oregon Elk have a lot better disposition then the ones I saw in Banff Nat’l Park in Canada. They can be very aggressive, and will charge people, and cars. On the upside I heard Elk meat taste pretty good.
I know how much you enjoy worship songs, so it is not surprising you picked four Psalms.
Singing praise to your Lord will keep your heart filled with joy. Singing is best prescription for lifting your spirit, unless you hear me doing my Elvis impression. The bugling Elks have a better sense of rhythm.
I look up the four living creatures of Revelation 4, also mentioned in Ezekiel 1:5. If what I read is correct, then these are the “seraphim, the angels that stand in the presence of God.” They should remind you that one day you too will stand before your God. Songs of worship remind you that no matter what world you will find after leaving the ark, there will always be God’s great reward of eternal life awaiting you in heaven.

The whole of Ephesians- one giant plank! But to keep things brief, Ephesians 3:16-21
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
And finally:
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26

Rain, dogs and horses are everybody’s favorite. Great companions and useful to have.
Lions, king of the jungle? Don’t tell that to the elephants.
You will need a separate area on your ark for the lions, or some of the other animals may not finish the voyage.
Birds overall are nice to have around, but pigeons? Not many city dwellers that I know will agree with that selection. There are two kinds of rats, well three if you count lawyers.
Pigeons are the kind that fly.
There should be lots of fish around, unless you want to save the fancy ones that we put in our aquariums.
John 3:16 It is good for the CF to remember Jesus sacrifice, and the promise of eternal life it brought man.
Romans 8:1 Also good to remember that the CF is no longer condemned by the law of sin and death, you have been set free by the law of the Spirit.
“Romans 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
I had not seen the words Spirit of “sonship” before. The Holy Spirit which came to indwell in the CF when Jesus, son of God sacrificed himself.
Not to be sacriligious, but I never know ABBA was mentioned in the Bible. Another prohecy perhaps.
I haven’t come accross the “Book of the Dancing Queen” in the Bible yet.
Using a whole book for a one plank might be too much weight, but we can never get enough faith.
The strength the Holy Spirit is immeasurable, more than the CF can imagine. The love of Jesus surpasses knowledge in the heart of the CF. To learn use the Holy Spirit as your guide in life is the goal of a CF.
With Psalm 73 we see the theme that while our human flesh and heart may fail. if the CF keeps the stregthen of God in their heart, that will not fail them.
You need at least one Psalm as a plank on your ark of faith to sing to the praise and glory of your Lord.
